1945-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008

Description

Produced at the Denver Mint in the wartime silver alloy used for Jefferson Nickels from 1942 through 1945, this DDR-008 is cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-802 and DMR-069. Three die states have been documented: Stage A shows the reverse in early die state with a die crack running from the head to the rim at the 12 o'clock position, progressing to late die state; Stage B is recorded in mid die state though unconfirmed; and Stage C represents late die state, also unconfirmed. The progression from early through late die state traces the working life of this reverse die as accumulated striking pressure gradually propagated the crack from the interior design toward the rim. The large wartime mintmark above Monticello — a D in this case — identifies the Denver production, while the 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese composition distinguishes these wartime issues from the standard copper-nickel alloy used before 1942 and after 1945. Collectors examining 1945-D wartime nickels should note the die crack at 12 o'clock as the primary Stage A diagnostic when attributing this variety.
