Description

Wartime Jefferson nickels struck in the emergency 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese alloy bear their mintmark — a large D for Denver — above Monticello's dome rather than to the right of the building, a placement change instituted in 1942 to distinguish the silver-alloy coins from standard cupro-nickel issues. DDR-006 documents very light hub doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the reverse of this 1945-D wartime nickel. The extensive die marker data reveals this reverse was associated with multiple obverse die marriages carrying RPM-024 designations, tracked across VarietyVista references UVC-287 / DMR-028 and UVC-1670 / DMR-077. The comment note "Reverse is LISTED as RPM-024" follows the cross-listing convention linking the DDR entry to its paired obverse RPM variety. Denver produced approximately 37.2 million silver-alloy nickels in 1945, the final year of the wartime composition before the return to standard cupro-nickel alloy.
