1945-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Third cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1945-D Jefferson Nickel in the wartime silver alloy, DDR-003 displays medium spread and extra thickness across multiple reverse elements: E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the M and last O of MONTICELLO. VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-799 and DMR-066. The breadth of affected elements — spanning the motto, denomination, country name, and building inscription — indicates a substantial hub displacement during die preparation that manifested across much of the reverse design. Medium spread with extra thickness describes doubling visible as both separated outlines and thickened letter strokes, combining displacement with overlay. The 1945-D was struck at Denver in the wartime silver composition of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, with the large D mintmark placed above Monticello's dome. This was the final year of wartime alloy production; the Mint returned to standard copper-nickel composition in 1946. Felix Schlag's design was struck at 21.2mm. Examine E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the M and final O of MONTICELLO for the medium spread and extra thickness.
