Cataloged by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID 1944-S 1-cent WRPM-013, this wartime silver Jefferson Nickel from the San Francisco Mint features an RPM documented through photographs taken by Brian Ribar for the Wexler RPM Files. Cross-referenced as none known. Die markers include a die scratch on the upper portion of the lapel and two die gouges on the lower portion of the lapel on the obverse. Reverse diagnostics show a die crack on the upper left wheat grains on the left wheat stalk. The lapel die scratches combined with the reverse wheat stalk die crack provide multi-surface attribution points. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1944-S features the oversized S above Monticello that distinguished wartime silver-alloy nickels.
