Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team, this 1944-S wartime silver Jefferson Nickel from the San Francisco Mint bears an S/S repunched mintmark with the oversized S above Monticello's dome. Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #10, Coppercoins 1944S-1MM-010, and Wexler Variety ID 1944-S 1-cent WRPM-011. Photos taken by Brian Ribar for the Wexler RPM Files. Die markers: obverse has a short die scratch on Lincoln's vest to the lower left of the S mintmark and a wavy die gouge on the lower portion of Lincoln's vest near the rim; reverse shows two slanted die scratches above the D of UNITED. The wavy die gouge near the rim is a particularly distinctive attribution feature. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the wartime alloy was mandated by Congress to conserve nickel for military armor during World War II.
