Description

Third in the repunched mintmark census for the 1944-D Mercury dime, RPM-003 exhibits a D over D displacement to the southeast, indicating the Denver mintmark punch was applied at least twice to the working die with the secondary impression landing below and to the right of the primary position. Adolph A. Weinman's Mercury (Winged Liberty Head) dime design, in production since 1916, positions the mintmark on the reverse between the olive branch and the fasces — a location that makes repunched mintmark diagnostics visible with modest magnification. The variety carries the Fivaz-Stanton designation FS-501, confirming its inclusion in the widely referenced Cherry Pickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties. Denver struck approximately 62.22 million dimes in 1944, a substantial wartime mintage that required numerous die pairs, and each working die received its mintmark through individual hand-punching, a process inherently prone to misalignment, tilting, and multiple impressions. The southeast displacement direction means the initial D punch landed lower and to the right, with the corrective second punch placed in the intended position — or vice versa — leaving overlapping letter impressions where the serifs and curves of the D show a shadow image offset to the southeast. Cross-referencing with FS-501 provides collectors a standardized lookup in the Cherry Pickers' Guide, which includes photographic references and diagnostic descriptions that complement the raw attribution data. Examination should focus on the mintmark area under 10-20x magnification, looking for doubled serifs or split vertical strokes in the D that reveal the directional displacement consistent with the southeast classification.
