Description

Strong extra thickness on the date, designer's initials, IN GOD WE TRUST, and to a lesser extent on LIBERTY marks this second doubled die obverse for the 1944-D Mercury Dime, one of Adolph Weinman's most beloved American coin designs. Vertical die scratches to the left of the I of IN on the obverse serve as the primary die marker, while die scratches running WSW/ENE through the E in UNITED identify the reverse die. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-VI and Wexler Variety ID: 1944-D 10¢ WDDO-002, dual attribution under both major classification systems confirms independent verification. Attributed by the Wexler Team, the Class VI designation indicates distorted hub doubling where the working hub was slightly deformed during manufacture.
