Description
Cross-referenced as FS-511, this 1944-D Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a D/S North over mint mark where a Denver D punch was applied over a previously placed San Francisco S, documenting inter-facility die transfer during World War II production. Die markers UVC-0176 / DMR-019 track three stages: Stage A with obverse at EDS and numerous light die scratches covering reverse at EDS; Stage B with a die scratch from 1 of date toward chin at EMDS, new die scratches on reverse at EMDS, and a die scratch from F of OF to T of UNITED; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The FS-511 Cherrypickers' Guide listing validates this as an actively sought collector variety. Composed of 95% copper and 5% zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, wartime die reassignment between mints was not uncommon as production demands strained all three facilities.
