1943-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-007
Error
Description
Carrying an unusually extensive set of die markers — three UVC/DMR pairs (UVC-747/DMR-024, UVC-748/DMR-025, UVC-749/DMR-026) — DDO-007 on the 1943-S wartime silver Jefferson Nickel presents a cataloging complexity rarely seen in doubled die documentation. The three pairs may reflect sub-varieties representing distinct die states, or multiple diagnostic reference points on a single die. Medium spread appears on LIBERTY, the star, and the date, with light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST on Felix Schlag's obverse. The graduated intensity maps the displacement gradient: LIBERTY, the star, and date fall in the zone of stronger offset while IN GOD WE TRUST received less displacement. The 1943-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint in wartime silver alloy (35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese), with the large S above Monticello identifying the composition. The alloy's heavier weight (5.67g vs. 5.0g standard) distinguishes these issues. Target LIBERTY and the date under 5x to 7x magnification for medium spread, then check IN GOD WE TRUST under higher power.
