1943-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
Distinguished by its specific doubling manifestation on letter edges, DDO-004 on the 1943-S wartime Jefferson Nickel presents light spread concentrated on the outer edges of IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, and the date. Die markers UVC-744 and DMR-018 fingerprint this working die. The "outer edges" specification is diagnostically precise — the doubling manifests along the outer perimeter of each letter stroke and design element, indicating the secondary hub impression was displaced outward from the die center relative to the primary impression. This radial outward offset produces the most visible doubling on the exterior contours of letters and the outer tips of the star's five points, while interior surfaces show less detectable displacement. Among the thirteen known 1943-S DDO varieties, this edge-specific manifestation differentiates DDO-004 from those showing uniform spread or extra thickness across the full letter width. The 1943-S was struck at the San Francisco Mint in the wartime silver alloy (35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese), bearing the large S above Monticello's dome. UVC-744 falls between DDO-002 (UVC-742) and DDO-006 (UVC-746) in the cataloging sequence. Collectors should examine the outer edges of LIBERTY's letter strokes under 7x to 10x magnification, looking for subtle secondary contour lines along the exterior of each letter rather than within the body of the stroke.
