1942 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-014
Error
Description
Strong extra thickness marks UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, both olive and oak branch stems, and the outside edges of the heraldic eagle's wings on DDR-014 of the 1942 Washington quarter. VarietyVista cataloged this die under UVC-0512 with DMR-031, tracking three stages: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with both reverse and obverse at mid-die-state (MDS), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The breadth of affected design elements — spanning inscriptions, organic botanical details on both stems, and the eagle's wing edges — indicates a hub displacement that produced detectable extra thickness across virtually the entire reverse face rather than being confined to a localized zone. Strong extra thickness differs from directional spread in that the secondary impression closely overlaps the primary, adding material width to existing design elements rather than creating a visibly offset duplicate image. The 1942 Washington quarter was struck at Philadelphia in 90% silver and 10% copper, and the year holds numismatic significance as the last full year of peacetime silver quarter production before wartime metal conservation measures and production shifts altered Mint operations. Stage B, where both sides have reached mid-die-state, represents the most commonly encountered die condition for this variety, as coins from this range constitute the middle portion of the die's production output — neither the early impressions before die wear begins nor the late-stage coins showing progressive deterioration.
