Description

The 1942 Washington Quarter DDR-012, cataloged under die markers UVC-0248 and DMR-025, shows a light spread on STATES OF and AM of AMERICA — a reverse doubling distributed across the upper legend. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is Early Die State, currently unconfirmed. Stage B is Middle Die State, also unconfirmed. Stage C is Late Die State, confirmed by several die scratches between the ER of LIBERTY — a diagnostic that distinguishes Stage C examples from earlier strikes without relying on the reverse doubling alone. The 1942 Washington Quarter was produced during the first full year of U.S. involvement in World War II. Proof coinage was suspended for the duration, making Philadelphia business strikes the sole production source. The 90% silver composition remained unchanged from 1932. DDR-012 is a VarietyVista-cataloged variety with UVC and DMR tracking codes for cross-referencing die marker photography in the database. Light spread varieties are best evaluated under strong raking light, where extra thickness on legend letters casts a slight shadow displaced from the primary character.
