1942 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-010

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-0246 and DMR-023, this tenth doubled die reverse for the 1942 Philadelphia Washington Quarter shows light spread on the ES of STATES, OF AMERICA, and the AR of DOLLAR. While the doubling is described as light, the spread across multiple legend elements provides enough attribution points for positive identification under magnification. Three die stages document the progression of this die pair. Stage A at early die state and Stage B at mid-die-state are both unconfirmed. Stage C at late die state develops extensive cracking: a die crack from BUS of PLURIBUS to the wing under AMER of AMERICA, a die crack down the eagle's right wing to the Q of QUARTER, a die crack across the forehead and hair, and a light die crack across the bust. The 1942 Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver composition at Philadelphia during the early war years. Ten documented doubled die reverses for a single date reflects the depth of Washington Quarter variety research, and the concentration of die cracks at Stage C suggests significant die stress toward the end of this die's useful life.
