1942 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005 / DDR-006

Description

DDR-006, which Wexler numbers WDDR-005, is a doubled die reverse on the 1942 Washington quarter with strong doubling on the eagle's right side, its beak and its body. Both catalogs cite Cherrypickers FS-803 (Wexler: FS-25-1942-803). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes an extremely strong spread to the east on the eagle's beak and neck, its right leg and talons, the upper edge of the left wing, the whole right wing, and some leaves, mostly on the right. On the obverse a scratch heads SE from the B in LIBERTY at its lower left and a short strong gouge heads NW from the top of the left upright of the T in LIBERTY. On the reverse a SW/NE gouge sits between the T and the A in STATES, a crack descends the eagle's right wing, and a scratch joins the bases of the I and T in UNITED. Kevin Flynn submitted it, and CONECA lists it as 6-R-IV. VarietyVista credits Geoffrey Fults. Under UVC-0243 and DMR-020, an early stage A and a middle stage B are unconfirmed. Stage C has a crack from the eagle's wing to the Q of QUARTER and both sides late. In stage D, very late on both sides, that crack runs through QUA of QUARTER, another crosses IBUS of PLURIBUS to the wing, and a third runs from the back of the eagle's head to the wing.
