Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista and cross-referenced as FS-803 (Fivaz-Stanton), the 1942 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006 on the Washington Silver Quarter exhibits strong spread on the eagle's right side, beak, and body. The Washington Quarter, designed by John Flanagan, was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm diameter. Die markers from VarietyVista are UVC-0243 and DMR-020, with four documented die states showing extensive progressive deterioration: Stage A at EDS is unconfirmed, Stage B at MDS is also unconfirmed, Stage C at LDS shows a die crack from the eagle's wing to the Q of QUARTER with the obverse also at LDS, and Stage D at Very Late Die State shows the crack extending through QUA of QUARTER, a new die crack through IBUS of PLURIBUS to the wing, and another from the back of the eagle's head to the wing with the obverse at VLDS. The FS-803 cross-reference confirms this variety is recognized by the Cherrypickers' Guide, one of the standard references for collectible die varieties. The strong spread on the eagle's body and beak makes this one of the more visually dramatic Washington Quarter doubled dies from the wartime silver era, and the four-stage die state progression provides collectors with a wide range of die state conditions to pursue.
