Description

Listed as DDR-003 by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-0240 and die marriage record DMR-017, this 1942 Philadelphia Washington quarter exhibits doubled die reverse characteristics manifesting as extra thickness on all lettering and stems, with strong division lines visible at the tips of the design elements. Three die stages chronicle the variety's life. Stage A in early die state has markers unconfirmed. Stage B shows both obverse and reverse at mid-die state. Stage C in late die state develops extensive cracking: a die crack extends from the Q of QUARTER to the wing tip, another runs through BUS of PLURIBUS to the wing, a crack traverses the bust, and an additional crack crosses the upper hair. The strength of the doubling, with clearly delineated division lines at the tips, places DDR-003 among the more visually prominent Washington quarter doubled die reverses from the early 1940s. The 1942 Philadelphia quarter was struck in 90% silver, and war-era Washington quarter varieties carry interest from collectors who appreciate the intersection of wartime numismatic production and die variety collecting.
