1942 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-002

Description

DDR-002, which Wexler numbers WDDR-001, is a doubled die reverse on the 1942 Washington quarter with very strong doubling across STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, the plume, the wing tips, the stems, the right-hand leaves and the rightmost talon. Both catalogs cite Cherrypickers FS-801; Wexler writes it FS-25-1942-801 (014). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records an extremely strong counterclockwise spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, QUARTER DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the leaves and the branches. Nothing is noted on the obverse; on the reverse a crack starts at URIBUS, reaches the upper left wing, and then follows that wing down to the I in AMERICA. CONECA lists the die as 2-R-V, and Ronn Kerr submitted it. VarietyVista credits Delma K. Romines. Under UVC-0239 and DMR-016, stage A has both sides in an early-middle state. Stage B, middle, has a crack through US of PLURIBUS to the wing and a crack down the eagle's right wing, with the obverse middle too. In stage C, late, the crack extends from URIBUS to the wing and the obverse is late.
