1941-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0210 and DMR-006, and cross-referenced as FS-801 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, DDR-001 on the 1941-S Washington Silver Quarter exhibits strong extra thickness on the rim letters, stems, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. This is a multi-variety die: the obverse is also listed as DDO-001, and the reverse pairs with MMS-001 (Small mintmark), making this a triple-variety working die combination that is exceptionally well-documented. Three die stages have been identified — Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B in mid die state is also unconfirmed, and Stage C shows a die crack running from the eagle's right wing to the Q of QUARTER in late die state, with the obverse showing a light die crack in the upper hair beneath ER of LIBERTY at mid die state. The FS-801 Cherrypickers' designation confirms this variety's importance within the mainstream attribution hierarchy. The 1941-S Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm, at the San Francisco Mint. John Flanagan's Washington obverse, based on a Jean-Antoine Houdon bust, and the heraldic eagle reverse constitute one of the most recognized designs in American numismatics. The San Francisco Mint struck approximately 16.08 million quarters in 1941, a year when wartime demand was accelerating production across all denominations.
