1941 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-013
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1485 with die marker reference DMR-015, this 1941 proof Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a particularly complex form of hub doubling: a triple hub transition described as "Broken T over Broken T over Full T Hub." This means the working die received three distinct hub impressions — first from a Full T master hub, then from a Broken T hub, and finally from another Broken T hub — creating a layered tripling effect rather than standard doubling. Triple hub transitions are substantially rarer than typical doubled dies because they require three separate hubbing events with measurable displacement between each. The primary diagnostic shows a strong spread as an extra horizontal bar above the last T of TRUST, with medium spread as an extra vertical bar. Die Stage A remains unconfirmed, Stage B documents obverse and reverse in Mid Die State, and Stage C is unconfirmed. As a proof striking from the Philadelphia Mint, this coin was produced on specially prepared polished planchets, providing superior surface quality that renders the triple hub transition in sharp relief. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait, 95% copper composition. The combination of triple hub impressions on a proof striking creates a variety of exceptional interest to specialists in Lincoln Cent die varieties.
