Description

Cataloged as DDR-003 (UVC-0199, DMR-015), this 1941-D Washington quarter shows strong extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, QUARTER DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and both stems. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is in early die state with markers unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die state develops a light die crack from the S of PLURIBUS to the wing, with the obverse also at mid-die state. Stage C reaches late die state with the crack extending from BUS of PLURIBUS to the wing, plus an additional die crack running down the eagle's right wing, while the obverse shows late-die-state wear. The progression of the PLURIBUS crack from a single letter to three letters provides a useful chronological marker for die-stage collectors. Early Washington quarter doubled dies from the 1940s are valued because the series was still young and silver composition gives the coins inherent metal value alongside the variety premium.
