1941 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-001

Description

DDR-001, which Wexler numbers WDDR-001, is a doubled die reverse on the 1941-D Washington quarter, strongly doubled on STATES OF AMERICA and lightly on the D of UNITED and the AR of DOLLAR. Both catalogs cite Cherrypickers FS-801 (Wexler: FS-25-1941D-801). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a strong counterclockwise spread from a pivot near 8 o'clock on QUARTER DOLLAR, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and the left-side leaves. Obverse stage A has nothing noted; obverse stage B has a crack heading east over the upper forehead into the hair and a crack across the bottom of the bust. Reverse stage A shows a horizontal scratch on the lower E in STATES and many other scratches on the reverse. Reverse stage B adds a crack down the eagle's right wing, a crack through BUS of PLURIBUS to the upper left wing, and a short crack heading east off the back of the eagle's head. Ron Pope submitted stage A and Kevin Flynn stage B. CONECA lists it as 1-R-V. VarietyVista credits Chris Pilliod. Under UVC-0197 and DMR-013, an early stage A is unconfirmed, and stage B has the reverse in a middle state, a light crack in the upper hair (late) and a light crack across the bust. Under UVC-0198 and DMR-014, stage C shows a crack from the eagle's right wing (late) with a changed obverse die in a middle state, a crack across the forehead and hair, and light Class VI extra thickness on the R of LIBERTY. Stage D adds a crack from the S of PLURIBUS to the wing (late), an eastward crack behind the eagle's head and a light crack across the bust (late). In stage E the cracks on both sides are longer and stronger, both very late.
