1940 (S) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

1940-S WDDO-006 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940-S Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling is a close spread toward the center on the date and the designer's initials, with slight doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST. On the obverse, a small die gouge lies left of the T in LIBERTY, near its top. The reverse is a doubled die that Wexler lists as 1940-S WDDR-003, with a spread toward the center on DIME, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the right star, the upper leaves under OF, STATES OF AMERICA and the tops of the axe and fasces. Parallel NW-to-SE die scratches lie in the space from the E in ONE to the mint mark, and many north-south scratches appear across the reverse. Kevin Flynn submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
