RRDC-10c-1940S-01 Bisecting Rim to Rim Die Crack
Error
Description
The 1940-S Mercury Dime — formally the Winged Liberty Head Dime, bearing Adolph A. Weinman's design of Liberty wearing a winged cap rather than the Roman god Mercury — is the host coin for RRDC-10c-1940S-01, a rim-to-rim die crack that bisects the entire obverse field. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver. The die crack begins at the rim above the E in LIBERTY, travels into Liberty's cap and hair, and reaches a junction where a second crack formed traveling upward to the left and ends in a blind terminus. The primary crack then re-enters at the bottom of the cap, passes through the neck of the portrait, and terminates at the opposing rim — a full rim-to-rim traverse bisecting the obverse. Cataloged in the Cuds on Coins reference as RRDC-10c-1940S-01, this variety documents the full crack propagation path from rim entry through cap, hair junction, neck passage, and rim exit. The Cuds on Coins database records rim-to-rim bisecting cracks separately from partial or curved cracks, with this example representing the benchmark cataloged bisecting crack entry for the 1940-S Winged Liberty Head Dime. 1940S San Francisco Mint 1940S San Francisco Mint RRDC-10c-1940S-01 The 1940-S Winged Liberty Head dime has a bisecting rim to rim die crack on the obverse die.
