1940 (S) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

1940-S WDDO-004 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940-S Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling, a spread toward the center, is on the date, with slight doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST. On the obverse, a die scratch curves north to south right of the back of the neck, and another runs WSW to ENE through the upper OD of GOD. On the reverse, heavy abrading has left some of the upper right leaves and branches detached, and SW-to-NE scratches run through that area; many north-south scratches cross the left leaves and branches. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
