1940-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005
Error
Description
Fifth in the DDO catalog for the 1940-S Mercury Dime, DDO-005 shows medium extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and designer's initials AW. Cross-referenced as 5-O-VI in the CONECA system — variety 5, obverse, Class VI distorted hub doubling — this variety shares its mechanism with DDO-001 (1-O-VI) from the same date and mint, demonstrating how a single distorted working hub can impart its deformation to multiple working dies. Each die receives the same Class VI thickening pattern but carries unique markers distinguishing them as separate catalog entries. Die markers UVC-269 and DMR-010 identify this working die, contrasting with DDO-001's UVC-116 and DMR-002. The medium intensity produces broadened letter strokes and numeral outlines clearly detectable at moderate magnification. The 1940-S Mercury Dime was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver at 2.5 grams. Examine IN GOD WE TRUST under 7x magnification for medium letter thickening, using the UVC and DMR codes to distinguish DDO-005 from other 1940-S obverse varieties sharing Class VI.
