Description
The 1940 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004 is a doubled die obverse (DDO) variety, where a misalignment during the die hubbing process created visible doubling on the obverse design elements. This variety was discovered on the 1940 Proof Jefferson Nickel - Reverse of 1938, part of the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. Die markers: Obverse: Series of die scratches on Jefferson's shoulder; two small die dots in his hair to upper right of forehead. Reverse: Series of horizontal die scratches through right long window; series of curving die scratches to lower right of large center semicircular window.
