1940 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team, the 1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDR-003 shows doubling across both wheat ears, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, and extra thickness on both stems — a comprehensive spread affecting nearly every reverse design element. Obverse die markers include a die crack running across the lower bust and die scratches angled north-northeast under the 19 of the date. The reverse carries its own array of markers: a die gouge on the upper left wheat ear, a strong die gouge left of the upper E in E PLURIBUS UNUM, a die gouge appearing as a dot to the right of the upper second U in PLURIBUS, and horizontal die scratches through the lower first S in STATES extending above the E in AMERICA. The breadth of the reverse doubling — touching wheat ears, motto, punctuation dots, and stems simultaneously — suggests a notable hub misalignment during die production. Collectors of early 1940s Wheat Cents will find this variety well-supported by its abundant die markers.
