1940 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Struck at the Philadelphia Mint without a mint mark, this 1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die reverse is classified as DDR-002. The doubling manifests as extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and on the wheat ears and stems. Cross-referenced as UVC-1442 and DMR-007, the variety has been tracked through multiple die stages: Stage A shows a die gouge south from the right wheat stalk at position K-3 in early die state, with the obverse also in early die state. Stage B at mid-die state remains unconfirmed, and Stage C at late die state is similarly unconfirmed. The progression from early through mid and late die states documents how the die's surface evolved over its working life as repeated strikes gradually wore down details and developed new cracks or gouges. The 1940 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Cent was produced during the pre-war period in substantial numbers, providing a large population for variety hunters to search. Extra thickness doubling on the wheat stalks and UNUM inscription can be subtle, requiring careful comparison against known normal specimens to confirm.
