Description

1940 WDDR-006 is a doubled die reverse on the 1940 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. All the outer devices show extra thickness, and the upper left tip shows separation lines. Obverse: a gouge (dot) above the date's 4 at its left edge; a gouge between the bottom of IN's N and the G of GOD; a series of horizontal scratches through the upper hair and the tops of WE's letters; a series of concentric scratches on the cheek, beard, and lower ear; and another series of concentric scratches through the middle of the bust, below the buttonhole. Reverse: faded horizontal scratches between PLURIBUS' B and U; smooth fields around the first dot and PLUR, the result of die abrasion; a small gouge in the lower right of UNUM's second U; vertical scratches through the bottom of CENT's C and on both sides of its T; mostly vertical scratches through UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; and a dot beneath OF's O, at its left edge. James C. Moreland submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 12-R-VI.
