Description

1940 WDDR-002 is a doubled die reverse on the 1940 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Every outer device shows extra thickness, and separation lines appear on some of the grains and on both upper wheat tips, left and right. Obverse: light, mostly vertical scratches under the date's 9; a diagonal scratch heading southwest from the 4; a gouge well south of the 9 and 4; scratches on the neck and below the chin; a series of vertical scratches rising from the forehead and the bridge of the nose; concentric scratches through LIBERTY's L; horizontal scratches through GOD; and a concentric scratch at the rim above WE. On the reverse: parallel diagonal scratches northeast of CENT's T; multidirectional scratches beneath the left wheat stem; a gouge running south from the outer edge of the right wheat stalk; and a series of diagonal scratches above the right wheat stem. Kent Greenhills submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 2-R-VI; the Coppercoins number given is 1942P-1DR-003.
