1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1940 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1940 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Both wheat ears and stems, EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM), and the dots show a strong Class II spread toward the center. Obverse Stage A: a short vertical scratch just right of the top of LIBERTY's T, and a scratch heading WNW from the middle of TRUST's first T. On Stage B the LIBERTY scratch can still be seen but the one at TRUST is gone. On the Stage A reverse many scratches run SW from between E PLU of E PLURIBUS; a strong south-to-north scratch lies right of ONE's E; and a scratch heads NNE from inside the bottom of CENT's C. Stage B keeps every Stage A marker except the scratch beside ONE's E. John A. Wexler submitted Stage A and Bill Wilson Stage B. CONECA lists it as 1-R-II; the Coppercoins number is 1940P-1DR-002. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
