1940 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

WDDO-013 on the 1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent, attributed by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID 1940 1¢ WDDO-013, exhibits a close spread on the 40 of the date — the two rightmost digits show tight doubling that is the primary obverse diagnostic for this die. Multiple die markers confirm attribution on both sides. On the obverse: a small die chip is present on the left side of the 0 in the date; a strong die scratch runs NNW from the upper left side of the L in LIBERTY; and a die scratch runs ESE under the 194 portion of the date and continues into the vest of Lincoln's jacket. On the reverse: criss-crossing die scratches are present through and to the left of the T in CENT. The 1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck in bronze at the Philadelphia Mint — the standard 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc composition that had characterized the Wheat Cent since 1909.
