Description

1940 WDDO-011 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The eyelid is doubled, with the extra one northeast of the normal eyelid, and extremely light separation appears on WE's E and the 4 and 0 of the date. Obverse: light concentric scratches in the field north of the date's 9 and 4; light vertical scratches through the upper and lower openings of LIBERTY's B; a series of horizontal scratches through the letters of GOD; and a diagonal scratch near the rim over GOD's O and G. Reverse: a series of mostly horizontal scratches between the left wheat tip and the E and P of E PLURIBUS, and another series through the letters of PLURIBUS; scratches in many directions right of ONE's E; many scratches in the fields around the ON of ONE and the EN of CENT; a hash-marked scratch pattern through and around OF; and multidirectional scratches above and below both wheat stems. Bill Wilson submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
