1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

1940 WDDO-006 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. A close clockwise spread shows on LIBE, the eyelid, the date, the lower front of the bust, and the second T of TRUST. Obverse Stage A: two vertical scratches between the 9 and 4; a scratch through the tops of TRU that reaches almost to WE's E; a scratch heading southwest from the O of GOD at its lower right; a short, heavy SSW scratch from under the beard; and a short, strong SSW scratch from behind the lips. By Stage B the TRU scratch and the pair between the 9 and 4 have almost vanished, while the heavier scratches remain. The reverse is a doubled die too, listed as WDDR-013. Its Stage A has two scratches from the upper right of EPU's E to the lower left of its P; a short southwest scratch from the center bar of CENT's E to its vertical bar; a scratch running east from the bottom of the S in PLURIBUS; and a gouge inside the top of CENT's N. On Stage B the scratches between the E and P are gone and the other markers are weaker. David Mulberry submitted Stage A and J. C. Moreland Stage B. CONECA lists it as 1-O-I-CW. An additional example was added to show the doubling more clearly.
