Description

Showing light hub doubling spread across multiple reverse design elements, the 1940-D Mercury Dime DDR-004 displays secondary contours on ES of STATES, OF AMERICA, the upper axe, the fasces, and the surrounding olive branch leaves on Adolph A. Weinman's iconic reverse. The fasces — a bundle of rods bound around an axe symbolizing national strength — is the central reverse motif, and the doubling on both the fasces and upper axe provides accessible attribution points. Cross-referenced as 4-R-II-C (fourth DDR, reverse, Class II, C classification), this variety's reverse die is also documented as RPM-007, meaning the same reverse working die carries a repunched mintmark in addition to the doubled die characteristics — a combination that adds collecting interest. Die markers include UVC-258 and DMR-012. The 1940-D was struck at the Denver Mint during the final years of the Mercury Dime series (1916-1945), in 90% silver at 2.50 grams on the composition unchanged since the type's introduction.
