1938 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

1938 WDDO-005 is a doubled die obverse on the 1938 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling appears as an extra eyelid lying north of the upper one. Obverse: vertical scratches above the 19 of the date; a diagonal scratch in the field right of the mouth; two parallel scratches running NE off the forehead; a small gouge on the neck well south of the ear; light, roughly vertical scratches above LIBERTY's B; and vertical scratches beneath its ER. Reverse: a scratch running NNE inside the C of CENT along its upper left curve; concentric scratches through the O and N of ONE and the top of CENT's E; diagonal scratches linking the O of OF with UNITED's U; a number of crisscrossing scratches in the AM of AMERICA; and a small gouge beneath the M of AMERICA on its left side. Daniel Griffin submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
