1938 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-007
Error
Description
The seventh doubled die obverse for the inaugural 1938 Jefferson Nickel, DDO-007 exhibits the same affected elements as DDO-006 — light spread on LIBERTY, the star, and the date — but originates from a distinct working die, confirmed by its separate UVC-587 and DMR-009 assignments. The sequential numbering relative to DDO-006 (UVC-586/DMR-008) indicates these two varieties were likely documented together, each preserving similar hub doubling on different individual dies. Two die stages parallel DDO-006: Stage A at Early Die State and Stage B at Mid Die State. The matching affected elements suggest both dies may have been hubbed during the same production session using an identical misaligned hub setup. Felix Schlag's winning design debuted in 1938 after a competition that drew 390 entries, and the Mint initially modified his reverse before later restoring elements closer to Schlag's vision. Philadelphia's 1938 nickel mintage of 19.5 million pieces marked the beginning of a series that continues today. Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-007.
