1937-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1937-S 25-cent WDDO-001, this Washington Silver Quarter displays a close clockwise spread on the date and the bottom of the ribbon behind Washington's head. The variety was submitted by Joe Feld with no other known cross-references. Obverse die markers include a die scratch parallel to the rim running west from the top of the L in LIBERTY, while the reverse shows a die scratch running south from the lower center of the A in STATES. The close clockwise spread indicates a Class V pivoted hub doubling event where the secondary hub impression was rotated slightly clockwise, producing visible offset on elements distant from the pivot center — in this case the date numerals at the bottom of the coin and the ribbon at Washington's neckline. The 1937-S Washington Quarter was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.3 mm. John Flanagan's obverse portrait of George Washington, based on the Houdon bust, positions the date at 6 o'clock and LIBERTY across the top, with IN GOD WE TRUST below Washington's chin. As WDDO-001, this variety holds the primary doubled die obverse catalog position for the 1937-S, representing the most significant or earliest-documented obverse hub doubling for this date-mint combination. Better-grade specimens are needed to fully characterize the die markers on both sides.
