1935 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed as Wexler 1935 1c WDDO-002 and cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-V and Coppercoins 1935P-1DO-005, this doubled die obverse on a 1935 Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a very close counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately nine o'clock, affecting IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. Obverse die markers include a short die scratch running north from the top right of the 9 in the date, along with northwest-southeast and north-northwest-south-southeast die scratches on the forehead above the eyebrow. Reverse die markers include a die clash mark extending from the lower E of ONE to the upper right side of the N in CENT, and another die clash mark between C and E in CENT. The reverse clash marks indicate this die pair experienced at least one strike without a planchet between the dies, adding a secondary variety characteristic beyond the primary doubled die obverse. Struck in bronze composition at the Philadelphia Mint during the middle years of the Lincoln Wheat Cent series.
