Description
First cataloged reverse cud for the 1935 Lincoln Wheat Cent, CU-1C-1935-01R documents the earliest known reverse rim failure for this date's Philadelphia production. As the "01R" designation indicates, this was the first reverse cud recorded in the Cuds on Coins system for 1935, establishing the baseline of the die failure record. A cud forms when a section of the die face breaks away at the rim, creating a raised, featureless plateau on every coin struck after the fracture. The 1935 Philadelphia cent was produced in significant quantities — nearly 246 million pieces — as Depression-era recovery drove demand for circulating coinage. This high mintage consumed many working dies, making die failures inevitable. The 1935 cent was struck in standard bronze — 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc — and carries no mintmark, identifying it as a Philadelphia product. Wheat cent cuds from the mid-1930s are accessible to collectors because relatively high mintages ensured substantial surviving populations, though the cud feature itself — disrupting the reverse wheat stalk design — remains uncommon enough to command interest. Documented by the Cuds on Coins project.
