1935 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

1935 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1935 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-001. Both give the Cherrypickers number FS-101 (13.9), which Wexler writes FS-01-1935-101 (013.9). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a strong Class V clockwise spread pivoting at 4:00, seen on IN GOD WE TRUST, Lincoln's eyelid, the date and the vest. Obverse stage A has vertical scratches crossing the date and lying right of the head, a crack that starts behind the bust's base, arcs over the designer's initials and returns to the bust, and a gouge projecting from the N of IN on its left edge. In stage B those markers are faint or gone and the crack at the bust base runs on into the field. Reverse stage A has a vertical scratch along the U of UNITED on its right, two scratches through the top of the first A in AMERICA, and a scratch running southeast off the bottom of the E in ONE. Reverse stage B has a northeast-southwest scratch inside the upper left of the O in ONE, an NNW-SSE scratch in the left wheat grains west of the O in OF, and a northwest scratch starting near the middle of the N in UNITED on its left side. Whaden Curtis submitted it. Crawford lists it as CDDO-001, CONECA as 1-O-V, and Coppercoins as 1935P-1DO-001. Wexler adds that John L. Blair first reported the variety to the team and that it appeared on pages 43 and 44 of their 1984 book The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die as 1935 one-cent 1-O-V. VarietyVista, which credits John Blair with the report, describes a medium spread on GOD WE TRUST, the eyelid and the date. Under its marker codes UVC-1323 and DMR-002 it lists an early stage A and a late stage C, both unconfirmed, and a middle stage B with a light crack over V.D.B. and the reverse also in a middle die state.
