1935 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004

Description

Displaying a medium spread directed south on Lincoln's eyelid, the 1935 Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-004 is cataloged by VarietyVista with cross-references UVC-1326 and DMR-005. The southward spread indicates the hub shifted slightly downward between successive impressions during die preparation, displacing the eyelid detail enough to create a visible secondary impression below the primary feature. Three die states are documented: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B in Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The confirmed Mid Die State provides the baseline for attribution, while the unconfirmed early and late stages suggest specimens exist at different points in the die's working life but have not been fully verified. Doubled die obverses from the mid-1930s are collected with enthusiasm because the wheat reverse design, combined with the era's historical gravity, gives these varieties dual appeal as die varieties and period pieces.
