Recorded as a 2017 discovery, the 1934-P VAM-1J "Die File Lines Left Obverse Field" Peace dollar reveals the fingerprints of die preparation on the final Philadelphia issue of the Peace dollar series. Cataloged as 1J III1 · B2a (Die File Lines Left Obverse Field) with die classification I-2 and rarity rating R-5 (estimated 30-75 known), this variety preserves evidence of rust removal from the working die. The obverse displays light vertical die file lines in the field opposite Liberty's nose and forehead — an area where the flat die surface was vulnerable to oxidation during storage or between production shifts. Philadelphia struck approximately 954,057 Peace dollars in 1934, the second-lowest mintage in the entire series behind only the legendary 1921 high relief, making any 1934-P variety inherently significant to collectors. Die file lines result from mint workers using fine-toothed files to smooth away surface corrosion (rust pitting) that would otherwise transfer as recessed pits on struck coins.
