Description

Discovered by David Close and cataloged as Plate 1A III 1 in the VAM reference, VAM-1A on the 1934 Peace Dollar documents a die scratch obverse variety classified as Die Class B2a with a rarity rating of I-2 R-5. The diagnostic feature is a long, thin, semi-circular die scratch extending from the L in LIBERTY downward through the G in GOD and over to the tip of Liberty's neck—a sweeping arc across multiple design elements that provides an unmistakable attribution marker. Die scratches of this length and curvature typically result from contact between the die face and a foreign object during handling or storage, permanently engraving the mark into the working die surface so that every subsequent strike reproduces it.
