Description

Documented upon its discovery in 2010, the 1934-P Peace Dollar VAM-1B "Pitted Left Reverse" carries B2a classification with an R-6 rarity rating — only 3 to 12 confirmed specimens known — making it one of the rarest attributable Peace Dollar sub-varieties. The defining characteristic is faint raised dots and splotches in the left reverse field, transferred from a rusted die surface. Die rust creates irregular pitting in the die steel through oxidation exposure — when moisture contacts an unprotected die face during storage, the resulting corrosion eats small cavities into the surface. These cavities fill with metal during striking, producing raised bumps and textured patches on the finished coin. The "faint" descriptor indicates the rust was relatively mild, producing subtle raised features requiring careful magnification to distinguish from bag marks or other post-strike damage. The 1934-P Peace Dollar carries a mintage of only 954,057 pieces — the lowest Philadelphia mintage in the entire Peace Dollar series — making the base coin itself a desirable date independent of any VAM attribution. Anthony de Francisci's design was struck in 90% silver at 26.73 grams on 38.1mm planchets.
