Description

Bill Toland discovered this variety in August 2011, identifying a curvy thread-like die impression at the edge of Liberty's head truncation that gives the 1934-P VAM-1C Peace Dollar its designation "Thread-Like Impression Neck." Plate notation II1 - B2a classifies the die pair, and the variety carries a rarity of I-2 R-5, indicating moderate interest with a scarce surviving population estimated at 131 to 300 known specimens. Beyond the thread-like impression, die file lines are visible at the date and TRVST on the obverse, suggesting the die underwent maintenance filing during service. The thread-like impression is an unusual artifact — not a crack, gouge, or clash mark, but a fine curving line embedded in the die surface that transferred as a raised thread on struck coins. Its origin may trace to debris or foreign material impressed into the die face during hardening. The 1934 Peace Dollar holds special significance as the final year of original production; the series would not see another issue until the 2021 centennial reissue.
