1934 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team (designation 1934 1¢ WDDR-004), the 1934 Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDR-004 shows extra thickness on the E PLU of EPU, the left dot, and the top of the left wheat ear — a Class VI extra-thickness pattern concentrated on the left side of the reverse. The die marker set is extensive. On the obverse, five X-shaped die scratches are arranged two east of the eye, one below the nose, and two below the beard; a long die scratch extends north from the 9 in the date; and a short scratch runs east from the bridge of the nose. On the reverse, a long die scratch runs east from the right center of the C in AMERICA through the second A, and two die scratches extend from the upper left of the U in UNITED northwestward to the left wheat ear. The five X-shaped obverse scratches are particularly distinctive as a rapid attribution screen — their specific distribution around Lincoln's facial features is confirmable at moderate magnification before the collector examines reverse doubling. Doubled die reverses on mid-1930s Philadelphia Lincoln cents represent an underpopulated field relative to the more heavily catalogued issues from the 1940s onward.
