1934 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista with UVC-1318 and DMR-006, this doubled die reverse on the 1934 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays medium extra thickness on OF AMERICA and both wheat stems, with light extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The doubling across multiple reverse legend elements and design features makes this a comparatively well-spread example for the date. Three die stages reveal a progressive die crack over Victor David Brenner's VDB initials: Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed, Stage B at mid-die state shows a light die crack over V.D.B. with the reverse at mid-die state, and Stage C advances to late die state where the die crack over V.D.B. has become heavy. This progressive cracking through the designer's initials provides a clear roadmap for die-state attribution — specimens with no visible crack over VDB represent the earliest state, those with a fine crack the middle state, and those with a heavy crack the latest. The 1934 cent was struck during the Great Depression in the standard bronze alloy of 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc, when mintages had begun recovering from the severe lows of 1931-1933 as economic conditions slowly improved.
