1934-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Cataloged as RPM-002 (UVC-263, DMR-007), this 1934-D Buffalo nickel displays a D/D South repunched mintmark using a large mintmark punch designated MMS-002. Three die stages track the variety. Stage A is in early die state with markers unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die state shows light die scratches through the V of FIVE and the N of CENTS on the reverse, with a die scratch in front of the buffalo's eye, while the obverse has reached mid-die state. Stage C is in late die state with markers unconfirmed. The southward repunching positions the secondary D impression below the final placement, leaving traces visible under magnification near the bottom of the mintmark. Buffalo nickels from the mid-1930s were nearing the end of the series, which concluded in 1938. The large mintmark punch style adds another attribution dimension for collectors tracking MMS varieties alongside RPM classifications.
