1934-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
On the distinctive Buffalo Nickel reverse — featuring a standing bison atop a mound with FIVE CENTS below — this 1934-D DDR-002 shows light spread on the left rear leg of the buffalo and the L of PLURIBUS. The bison's legs provide an excellent diagnostic zone for doubled die detection because the fine sculptural detail of James Earle Fraser's animal portrait readily reveals secondary impressions. Light spread on the L of PLURIBUS confirms the hub displacement extended beyond the central bison figure into the upper motto area. Three die stages are documented under catalog codes UVC-134 and DMR-004. Stage A places both the reverse and obverse in early die state, establishing that the variety was present from the die's first production. Stage B at mid-die state remains unconfirmed. Stage C at late die state is also unconfirmed, suggesting documented specimens concentrate in the early production window. The 1934-D Buffalo Nickel was struck during the later years of the series, which would end in 1938 when the Jefferson Nickel replaced it. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDR-002 rewards careful examination of the buffalo's left rear leg and the L in PLURIBUS under at least 5x magnification to distinguish the light secondary impressions from strike characteristics.
