1934-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Cataloged as RPM-001 for the 1934 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel, this variety displays a D/D repunched mintmark shifted West, using the small mintmark style designated MMS-001. VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-135 and DMR-005 across three documented die states. Stage A represents early die state, while Stage B advances to mid-die state, both currently unconfirmed with published photographs. By Stage C, the die had deteriorated significantly: a prominent die crack runs southeast from the plain above the F of FIVE, passing through the C of CENTS and continuing to the rim, placing this firmly in late die state. The obverse die likewise shows late die state characteristics. Buffalo Nickels of the mid-1930s were struck on dies that endured heavy production demands as the nation emerged from the Great Depression, and repunched mintmarks from this era reflect the manual process of individually punching mintmark letters into working dies at branch mints. Specimens with clear new high-magnification digital photographs are still sought to better document this variety across all three stages.
